NEBOSH Open Book Exams: A New Era in Health and Safety Qualifications

NEBOSH Open Book Exams are a new approach to health and safety certification, allowing candidates to complete assessments from home using online resources.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) announced the introduction of Open Book Exams (OBE) for several of their qualifications. This new format allows learners to take their exams remotely, from the safety and comfort of their own homes, using an online platform.

What is NEBOSH Open Book Exam? and How does it work?

The NEBOSH Open Book Exams (OBE) was introduced in response to Covid-19, allowing learners to take their exams safely from home or other suitable locations. The OBE is only applicable to the following units: IG1, IGC1, NG1, and NGC1, and is available to learners studying for the National and International General Certificate, National and International Construction Certificate, and National and International Fire Certificate.

MNR Training Institute, a leading provider of NEBOSH courses, welcomes this change and recognizes the benefits it brings to learners. With the Open Book Exams, learners can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of key health and safety concepts without the pressure of a traditional exam setting. The new format also eliminates the need for learners to travel to a physical location to take the exam, saving them time and money.

The NEBOSH Open Book Exams are available for the following units:

  • International General Certificate Unit 1 (IG1)
  • International General Certificate Unit 2 (IGC2)
  • National General Certificate Unit 1 (NG1)
  • National General Certificate Unit 2 (NGC2)
  • International Construction Certificate Unit 1 (ICC1)
  • International Fire Certificate Unit 1 (IFC1)
  • National Construction Certificate Unit 1 (NCC1)
  • National Fire Certificate Unit 1 (NFC1)

To register

To register for the NEBOSH Open Book Exams, learners can visit the NEBOSH website or get in touch with their course provider. At MNR Training Institute, we guide learners through the registration process and provide support throughout their learning journey.

Once registered, learners will receive a username and temporary password from NEBOSH via email three days before the exam. They will then need to log in, create a new password, and familiarize themselves with the online platform.

On the day of the exam, the question paper will be available on the platform at 09:00 BST. Learners will have 24 hours to complete and submit their answers.NEBOSH Open Book Exams provides 24-hour support during the exam date to ensure that learners have a smooth and stress-free experience.

It is important for learners to adhere to the NEBOSH Open Book Exams requirements. These include referencing any materials used during the exam, staying within the specified word count, and completing a closing interview with the course provider. At MNR Training Institute, we provide guidance on these requirements and help learners prepare for the closing interview.

What to do After the NEBOSH Open Book Exams?

After the exam, learners will receive their results via email 50 working days after the exam date. Certificates are usually released by NEBOSH 20 working days after the results. Upon confirmation of the delivery address with the learner, certificates are sent out via 1st class Royal Mail or can be posted via a courier service at an additional cost.

The NEBOSH Open Book Exams requirements must be adhered to. Learners must reference any materials used during their NEBOSH exam, as answers are checked for plagiarism. The exam specifies a word count, with a 10% tolerance, and NEBOSH examiners will not mark past the maximum word count. The assessment gives a scenario at the beginning of the exam, describing a realistic workplace or organization, and then asks learners to carry out tasks related to their specific role.

After the exam, learners must complete a closing interview with the NEBOSH course provider. The interview consists of three parts: identity checks, the learner’s experience of the exam, and a series of questions from NEBOSH relating to the content of the exam. The closing interview is not a pass or fail and interviewers cannot discuss the learner’s exam paper. The interviews take place using Zoom, Skype, or Teams, with an appointment sent along with a link and passcode for the online interview room. There is a two-week period in which the interviews are completed. If learners miss the interview, a second one is attempted. If this is also missed, NEBOSH will likely withhold the exam results and void the exam.

After the NEBOSH Open Book Exams, results are emailed out 50 working days after the exam date directly from NEBOSH to the email address provided when purchasing the course. Certificates are usually released by NEBOSH 20 working days after the results. Upon confirmation of the delivery address with the learner, they are then sent out via 1st class Royal mail. Learners can also choose to have their certificate posted via courier service at an additional cost.
